چکیده

Abstract Sea‐level rise (SLR) will cause coastal groundwater to in many urban environments. Inundation of contaminated soils by (GWR) alter the physical, biological, and geochemical conditions that influence fate transport existing contaminants. These transformed products can be more toxic and/or mobile under future driven SLR GWR. We reviewed vulnerability sites GWR a US national database case comparison with San Francisco Bay region estimate risk rising human ecosystem health. The results show 326 Superfund program may vulnerable changes depth or flow direction as result SLR, representing 18.1 million hectares land. In Area, we found is predicted impact twice much land area inundation from 5,282 additional state‐managed contamination 1.0 m scenario. Increases only few centimeters elevation mobilize soil contaminants, directions heterogeneous environment underground pipes utility trenches, new exposure pathways. Pumping for flood protection elevate saltwater interface, changing salinity mobilizing metals soil. Socially communities are disproportionately exposed this at both scale regional Area.

High-resolution pollutant dispersion modelling in contaminated coastal sites.

The recent developments in pollutant measurement methods and techniques necessitate improvements in modelling approaches. The models used so far have been based on seasonally averaged data, which is insufficient for making short-term predictions. We have improved the existing modelling tools for pollutant transport and dispersion on three levels. We significantly refined the numerical grid; we ...

Future Coastal Population Growth and Exposure to Sea-Level Rise and Coastal Flooding - A Global Assessment

Coastal zones are exposed to a range of coastal hazards including sea-level rise with its related effects. At the same time, they are more densely populated than the hinterland and exhibit higher rates of population growth and urbanisation. As this trend is expected to continue into the future, we investigate how coastal populations will be affected by such impacts at global and regional scales...

Coastal Groundwater Management with Nearshore Resource Interactions

This paper develops a regional hydrologic-ecologic-economic model of groundwater use and a nearshore ecosystem. Particularly, we model coastal groundwater management and its effects on discharge, nearshore water quality, and marine biota (e.g., indigenous marine algae). We show that incorporating the external effects on nearshore resources increases the optimal steady-state head level. Numerica...

Planning groundwater development in coastal aquifers

This study examines an approach for planning groundwater development in coastal aquifers. The seawater intrusion is controlled through a series of barrier extraction wells. The multi-objective management problem is cast as a nonlinear, nonconvex combinatorial model and is solved using a coupled simulation–optimization approach. A density-dependent groundwater flow and transport model, SEAWAT is...

Groundwater withdrawal in randomly heterogeneous coastal aquifers

We analyze the combined effects of aquifer heterogeneity and pumping operations on seawater intrusion (SWI) in coastal aquifers, a phenomenon which is threatening Mediterranean and worldwide regions. We conceptualize the aquifer as a three-dimensional randomly heterogeneous porous medium, where the spatial distribution of permeability is uncertain. The geological setting of our study is pattern...
